The gripping drama returned to TV on New Year's Day on BBC One, and saw the pair reunite to hunt serial killers and fight gangsters.

But it was a saucy flashback scene that had people talking on Twitter.

Alice asked the detective if he felt 'aroused', and one viewer wrote on Twitter: "THEY GOT IT ON"

Another said: "Yay they banged"

Others let memes do the talking, and a third mused: "After all this time the scene I really needed in my life!"

Earlier in the episode, Alice appeared to be jealous as she probed Luther about his police partner D.S. Catherine Halliday, (Wunmi Mosaku).

He refused to indulge her - asking her instead why she had returned.

After they broke into a car, Luther begged Alice - played by Ruth Wilson - for his life back.

Meanwhile, Luther and Halliday enjoyed a frosty first episode together.

And at one point Luther spoke to his boss DSU Martin Schenk about DS Halliday and was warned that she could soon take over the team.

Schenk appears to resent the fact Halliday has been fast-tracked into a detective position and the episode seemed to set us up for a battle between Luther and Halliday.
