What are the latest fan theories and questions?

Is the masked killer dead?

DCI John Luther was hunting a masked killer in episode two, but when he was finally hunted down the predator turned the knife on himself and slit his throat.

However, it turned out that he was just a cover.

Meanwhile Vivien Lake got angry at a man dressed the same as the killer, with fans presuming the therapist and her husband are in on the murders.

But will they be revealed tonight?

Why has Alice come back?

Episode one ended with Alice, played by Ruth Wilson, knocking on Luther’s door.

She greeted the detective with one single word: “Wotcher”.

After the episode ended, fans were shown a glimpse of Wednesday’s episode which sees Alice appearing to work alongside Luther.

Will he end up sidelining Catherine Halliday his new compatriot and fellow officer? Who knows.

Do Luther and Catherine Halliday have history?

To say Luther and DS Catherine Halliday enjoyed a frosty first episode together would be an understatement.

At one point Luther spoke to his boss DSU Martin Schenk about DS Halliday and was warned that she could soon take over the team.

Schenk appears to resent the fact Halliday has been fast-tracked into a detective position and the episode seemed to set us up for a battle between Luther and Halliday.

Could Luther be keeping Halliday at arms-length and concealing some of his behaviour because of a pre-existing relationship with his new partner?

Where is George Cornelius’ son and who has kidnapped him?

Episode one got underway with Cornelius and his associates giving Luther a working over as they sought information about the whereabouts of Cornelius’ son.

Luther broke free and repeatedly insisted he had no knowledge of where Cornelius’ son was.

Later on Cornelius was lured to a swimming pool where he was promised his son would be – only to realise he had been had.

Viewers were shown a hooded figure running away after being shot at by Cornelius – leaving fans none the wiser on who had taken the gangster’s son or why.

What has happened so far in Luther?

Luther is an award-winning BBC detective drama following the troubled and volatile DCI John Luther, played by Idris Elba.

Beginning in 2010, the programme has shown the London detective becoming increasingly consumed by the heinous crimes he’s been investigating with the Serious and Serial Crime Units.

The first series saw him form an unlikely bond with seductive psychopath Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson), and they formed a twisted romance before Alice mysteriously disappeared.

Series four, which unfolded over a mere two episodes in 2015, saw Luther chase a cannibalistic killer with Cotard syndrome alongside his new colleague Emma.

Critics mostly agreed on the fact the ending, which saw Luther walking alone in his famous trench coat with few answers and fewer friends, was not a satisfying conclusion for fans.
