LUTHER fans were left bereft on Twitter after telly's favourite psychopath, Alice Morgan, seemingly plunged to her death.

The final episode in series 5 - branded the 'scariest ever' - left viewers mourning John's pal (Ruth Wilson) as the major character was mercilessly killed off.

Tweets poured in as fans paid their respects to twisted Alice - who had shot dead DS Halliday moments before.

One person said: "Nooooooooooooooooo Alice? Halliday? The end of the bloody season????"

Another said: "alice remains one of the baddest characters on telly"

And another pledged: "Well that's the end of my interest in #Luther. Alice Morgan is one of the best characters on TV. Unless she's resurrected, Series 6 can f*** off."

Others let the memes do the talking once their shock had thawed.

Alice's fate was sealed when she arrived to find John Luther (Idris Elba) and DS Catherine Halliday at the house Dr Jeremy Lake had taken hostage.

They had discovered a blood bath, with John battering the serial killer unconscious after he attacked Halliday.

When the coppers waited outside for backup to arrive, Halliday accused Luther of using her as bate, with the pair arguing as Alice turned up and brutally shot her dead.

She then chased Luther into a warehouse but plunged to her death off dodgy scaffolding.

It's the second time the character has 'died', with her death announced at the beginning of season four, and Luther's investigation into Alice's passing being a key factor in the subsequent episodes.

Elsewhere in season 5's finale, Luther and Cornelius shot dead the assassin that killed Benny Silver, and Mark North was left questioning whether John had turned bad as he told him to clean up the mess left from the dead bodies.
