As he entered with DS Halliday - played by Wunmi Mosaku - he turned on a torch to see in the pitch darkness.

But moments later, after locating the murderer, John stepped outside into the blazing sunshine.

The blunder was immediately picked up on by eagle-eyed viewers, who took to Twitter to comment.

One wrote: "Did #luther just go from the middle of the night to the middle of the day?"

A third tweeted: "Anyone notice how quickly it went from night to day in #Luther?" while a fourth agreed, writing: "How did that last scene in #Luther go from night time when they arrived and day time when they left the house?? Did they chill all night with all those dead bodies??"

A fellow viewer shared: "#Luther brilliant loved it but.... they go in the house at night and come out daytime...."

Viewers were also outraged by the shock ending, which saw psychopath Alice Morgan kill DS Halliday before plunging to her death.

The final episode in series 5 - branded the 'scariest ever' - left viewers mourning John's pal (Ruth Wilson) as the major character was mercilessly killed off.

Tweets poured in as fans paid their respects to twisted Alice - who had shot dead DS Halliday moments before.
