The social worker told her: "Dawn there's something I need to tell you about Lucas. I need to talk to you about his long term future."

And as Dawn got excited about getting her son back home with her, the social worker appeared to mock her.

"I'm sure you would Dawn," she said, adding: "But it's not as straight-forward as that."

"He's living with his foster parents. We didn't know where you were. We sent letters, left messages...

"Dawn, I need you to listen carefully,"; she added as she refused to pass on a present from Dawn to her son.

"It's great that you're doing better now but we have to do what's best for Lucas. I'm very sorry Dawn, despite all our best efforts, we were unable to find you sow e had to make a decision about what to do in his best interests.

"Like I said Dawn, it's not as simple as that. We're looking to get a placement order. We're looking to have Lucas adopted."

Dawn was horrified to be told her son was going to be adopted, even more so when the social worker refused to hear her pleas.

She added: "I'm sorry but you didn't contact us for months and Lucas needs a stable environment.

"I understand this is upsetting but we didn't know if you were alive or dead. It's good that you're in a better place now but we need to do what's best for Lucas."

Viewers were outraged at how the social worker refused until the very end to tell Dawn she had the right to fight the adoption and get her son back.

Only when Dawn insisted she would fight did the social worker reveal she had a legal right to appeal in court.

One angry viewer tweeted: "Social worker being portrayed as an unemotional, unsympathetic robot #Emmerdale"

Another added: "Not the most caring social worker. It's no wonder people think they're only there to judge and steal children. It's inaccurate."
