Sun columnist Clarkson, 58, then asks a tricky £1million history question about British Prime Ministers.

On reaching the milestone, Clarkson says: “Well, I can hardly believe it. I didn’t actually believe I’d say it but I’m going to.”

He adds: “What a player, what a fabulous player.” He also praises his “extraordinary” gameplay.

The contestant, from Birmingham, uses all four of his lifelines — including one to tackle the £2,000 question.

Clarkson also helps when the contestant uses the Ask The Host lifeline on a big money question about engineering. The host tells him: “I do have two doctorates in engineering”.

The last person to win the show’s £1million prize was Ingram Wilcox in 2006. Other champions include Pat Gibson in 2004, David Edwards and Robert Brydges in 2001 and Judith Keppel in 2000.

Army Major Charles Ingram also won in 2001 — but was found to have cheated and was convicted of fraud.

Clarkson took over from previous host Chris Tarrant last year and was accused of making snide remarks to some of the “stupid contestants”.

But he said: “This time they’ve been — with one or two exceptions — sparky and on-it and bright and deserving of a place in the chair.”

The new series is on every night until Friday.
