Eight celebs cha-cha-charge 620 miles in 15 days from the Alps to Vatican in Pilgrimage: The Road To Rome.

Ex-Strictly Come Dancing star Brendan Cole had an audience with The Pope in a new BBC2 series

The group ditch luxuries as they cover the last leg of the Via Francigena route from Canterbury, Kent, to the Italian capital.

At the end of the trip, made by 1,200 people a year, they are filmed enjoying lone audiences with Pope Francis.

A show source said: “It was unprecedented access and the ‘pilgrims’ were understandably excited.

“It was really emotional. There were lots of tears — as viewers will find out.”

The group cover the last leg of the pilgrims’ route to Italian capital Rome

Olympic long jump hero Greg Rutherford and actors Les Dennis and Lesley Joseph also took part.

As did comics Stephen K Amos and Katy Brand, TV host Mehreen Baig and ex-Eurovision winner Dana.

The three-part series is due on air later this year.
