What was Baptiste Series 1 about?

The first series ended on Sunday, March 24, 2019, with Julien Baptiste, played by Tchéky Karyo, 65, appearing to make a U-turn on his decision to retire, leaving it open for another run.

Baptiste originally appeared in hit BBC show The Missing.

This time Julien and his wife are on a visit to Amsterdam, when the Chief of Police - who also happens to be an old girlfriend - seeks out his help due to his renowned and methodical crime solving skills.

Baptiste then rapidly becomes embroiled in a case that looks beyond the beautiful streets, canals and houses of Amsterdam to the city's seedy underbelly.

He discovers he has a son, Niels, played by Boris Van Severen.

With Edward Stratton (Tom Hollander) and Europol officer Genevieve (Jessica Raine) they try to track down a missing girl trafficked by a Romanian gang, led by Constantine.

They are helped on the way by Kim Vogel, a transitioned woman, played by Talisa Garcia.

But in the finale Baptiste discovers it's his son who is working with the gangsters, with Niels shooting dead his mum before being arrested.

The series was filmed in Antwerp, Ghent, Amsterdam and Deal in Kent.

The show was produced by Harry and Jack Williams of Two Brothers Pictures.

Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, says, “Julien Baptiste - played by the exceptional Tchéky Karo - is one of the Williams brothers’ greatest creations and utterly deserving of his own show.

"This first series of Baptiste will allow us to discover more about Julien than ever before as he is parachuted into the centre of a shocking and wide-ranging crime story.”
