EastEnders icon June Brown, 92, reveals she’s going blind and avoids going out
The soap legend said her vision is deteriorating to the point she has "no central vision at all." June revealed she no longer attends social functions and struggles to recognise her friends.
EASTENDERS star June Brown has revealed she can barely see and avoids going to social gatherings.
The 92-year-old soap icon told The Mirror her vision is deteriorating to the point she has “no central vision at all.”
Speaking to the publication, she said: “I haven’t driven for years and I can’t really go out socially due to my eyesight.
“I never go to soap awards or suchlike now. I don’t recognise people that I know and they would think I was snubbing them.
“And I have got loads of fan letters that I haven’t been able to read or reply to since it all started.”
The actress added: “Just pray for your health and strength, hearing and eyesight, and an active mind.”
Brown has starred in EastEnders since 1985, and has received a Bafta nomination for her work on the soap.
The soap veteran signed a new contract last April to keep her on the BBC1 soap for the foreseeable future.
A telly source said at the time: “BBC bosses know that June has a huge fanbase and she’s a big draw for older viewers.
“She’s a real character and the rest of the cast and crew love her too.
“They want her to be on the show as long as she feels comfortable acting so are delighted that she’s agreed to renew her contract.
“June finds working regularly keeps her feeling young at heart and enjoys the job immensely.”
In 2012 June had a six month break from the show to pen her autobiography, but returned the following year.
