James Corden admits wife Julia Carey has NEVER watched hit sitcom Gavin & Stacey that launched his career
JAMES Corden has admitted his wife Julia Carey has NEVER watched Gavin & Stacey, the hit sitcom that launched his career.
The actor explained the mother of his three children finds it shocking how obsessive his fans are more than a decade after the BBC show first aired.
He found fame when he co-wrote and starred in Gavin & Stacey in 2007 alongside Ruth Jones.
James - who now presents The Late Late Show in America - is still shouted at in the street by fans who love and adore his character Smithy.
"There is a level of ownership around my character in Gavin and Stacey," James told David Tennant Does A Podcast With.
"My wife to this day who has never watched an episode of Gavin and Stacey is constantly taken aback by the level of 'Smithy, let's get a beer'.
"I always think well, I don't drink beer it gets me a little gassy.
"I love they feel such an affection, but at the same time it's sort of strange if you're with your children."
The 40-year-old recently revealed he only wrote the script for Gavin & Stacey because he was being ignored for film and TV roles for being "too fat".
While his co-stars in The History Boys were being offered lead roles on a daily basis, James explains he was left behind because of the way he looked.
He said: “It felt like people were going, ‘We think you’re quite good. It’s just because of what you look like...’
“It’s a funny world, entertainment. If an alien came down and they had to take a reading on planet Earth by just watching films or TV, they would imagine that if you are chubby, or fat, or big, you never really fall in love, you never have sex, certainly no one really ever finds you attractive.
“You’ll be good friends with people who are attractive and you’ll often be a great sense of comfort to them and perhaps you’ll chip in with the odd joke every now and then.
“As you get older you’ll probably be a judge in something or be dropping off a television to a handsome person in a sitcom.

And that’s really how it can feel. It felt like if the world of entertainment was a big banquet table, and people would be like, ‘No, no, no, there isn’t a seat for you here’.
“And I was like, ‘If that’s not going to happen then I’m just going to try to make something happen for myself’.”
After his sitcom success over three series he went on to Hollywood movie roles, including in 2014 adventure comedy Into The Woods and voicing 2016 animation Trolls.
He is arguably most famous for his Carpool Karaoke on The Late Late Show with stars including Paul McCartney and Adele.
