A PREQUEL to hit musical Grease is in development - 41 years after the original film hit the big screen.
It has been reported that Summer Loving will follow what happened between lead characters Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson before they reunited at Rydell High School.
have reported that Paramount's division Paramount Players are taking charge of the production, with veteran writer John August enlisted to write the script.
August is the mastermind behind huge films such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Big Fish.
Grease, released in 1978, starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as lead characters Danny and Sandy - high school teenagers who couldn't be more different.
Sandy is an Australian good girl virgin whereas promiscuous Danny is the coolest kid in the school, with the pair enjoying a summer romance before going their separate ways.
Danny is left mortified when Sandy shows up at his US high school and pulls his reputation into disrepute - and both characters end up making changes to their looks and attitudes before living happily ever after.
The couple's initial summer fling is recounted in musical number Summer Nights, and it is believed that the prequel will follow this first meeting and their differing views on the romance.
Temple Hill will produce the film alongside Picturestart, which is run by Lionsgate executive-turned-producer Erik Feig.
Temple Hill is the company behind popular teen romcom Love, Simon as well as the Maze Runner movies.
Since news of the prequel broke, devoted fans of the first film have taken to social media to share their cynicism.
One wrote: "Imagine thinking that making a GREASE prequel is a good idea."
Another sniped: "I watched Grease last Saturday night, there’s a whole intro and a song about how they met. Please don’t even bother with a prequel."
A third wrote: "Who asked for this? I love Grease, but I have zero interest in a prequel."
One fan joked: "Ready for this Grease prequel to finish the job, and completely tear the country apart."
