LUCY Fallon’s boyfriend Tom Leech has hilariously mocked her announcement she’s set to leave Coronation Street with a tribute to Barcelona footballer Xavi Hernandez.
The Sun Online exclusively revealed the 23-year-old actress, who plays Bethany Platt on Corrie, is leaving the cobbles once her contract expires in 2020 to pursue other acting roles.
Confirming the news on , Lucy wrote: “After the most incredible 4 years, I have made the extremely difficult decision to leave Coronation Street at the end of my contract in 2020.”
At first it appeared as if her boyfriend of nearly three years had posted a tribute to his beloved girlfriend on social media, however if finished with a dedication to “king of Spain” Xavi Hernandez, who had announced his retirement from football.
The cheeky chap wrote: “Well folks… I’m sure you’ve all seen the news.
The end of an era… Something I don’t think anyone saw coming. We’ve learnt that a true master of their craft is moving on…
“Someone who has and will be admired by so many. I think I speak for everyone when I say you’ll be truly truly missed from your line of work which you’ve shone so brightly in. You’ll be watched on YouTube and shown on re-runs for years to come and by generations far beyond us.
“Thankyou for the memories and enjoy seeing out the rest of your contract, we’re all right behind you til the last minute x,” before then posting a snap of the breaking news coverage announcing Xavi’s retirement.
Lucy clearly saw the funny side of the joke as he also shared a screengrab of her Instagram story, writing: “If I hear @t_leech call himself a genius Cos of his insta stories one more time, I’m booting him out of the house. Boys an idiot”
Lucy’s decision to leave marks the seventh person to announce they were quitting the soap this year.
Continuing her statement on Twitter, she said: "I’ve made lifelong friends with some of the most talented and hardworking people in the industry, I’ve had some terrific and immensely important storylines and I’ve laughed with the best people everyday. I’m so thankful to Iain and everyone at Coronation Street, I owe everything to them and I will miss them greatly.”
Show bosses have already been told and have resigned themselves to losing one of their biggest stars.
Producer Iain Macleod exclusively told us: “Lucy advised us at the start of this year that she would like to leave at the end of her current contract in 2020 to pursue other projects.
"She is an amazing performer and has been at the centre of some huge stories for us during her time on the show. I have no doubt that her stellar career will continue beyond the cobbles and would like to wish her all the best in whatever she does next - starting with the brilliant final chapter of Bethany’s story!”
The timing of the departure is a headache for bosses who are still reeling from recent resignations.
So far in 2019 Tristan Gemmill, Connie Hyde, Kym Marsh, Bhavna Limbachia, Faye Brookes and Katie McGlynn have all quit.
