Brooke Houts is a YouTuber from Atlanta, Georgia and now lives in California.

She is 20-years-old and has more than 334,000 subscribers to her channel.

Her YouTube channel started in 2014 and it mostly features videos of her day-to-day life.

It is understood they don't believe the dog is in immediate danger

Controversial YouTuber Logan Paul said the video was "remarkably grotesque" in a Twitter post and claimed Houts was just putting on an act for the video.

He also claimed she spat on Sphinx, writing: "Discipline your animals should they misbehave. i get it. but despite the hitting, the spitting is a totally unwarranted, inappropriate, and vile display of energy that makes this woman completely unfit to own that dog."

Animal welfare organisation Peta also tweeted: "Dogs deserve respect. If you can't treat dogs with kindness and instead hit them, don't get one. Attn@YouTube: Please remove Brooke Houts from your platform."

What has Brooke said about the allegations?

Brooke issued a lengthy apology, saying: "I am NOT a dog abuser or animal abuser in any way, shape, or form.

"Anyone who has witnessed or heard true animal abuse will be able to clearly see that.

"My dog, in no way, shape, or form was hurt by any action that I displayed in this video."

She also claimed she didn't spit on the dog, writing: "I did NOT spit on my dog, but I understand how it could look like I did. Did I get in his face and take unnecessary actions towards him? Yes I did, and that was not the way I should've handled the situation. Did I spit on my dog? No."

She also claimed it was too expensive to hire a trainer for him.
