THE Great British Bake Off's Steph Blackwell was the Star Baker four times this series, but she failed to nab the top prize after a disastrous final.
Here is what you need to know about the shop assistant who won hearts of the British people in Bake Off 2019.
Who is The Great British Bake Off 2019 contestant Steph?
Steph, a 28-year-old shop assistant, got into baking thanks to her grandad, who loves homemade bread.
The Chester native is self-taught and considers herself an ‘intermediate, still-learning’ baker and her passion for sports and wellness inspires her creations.
She likes challenging herself by making her bakes healthier, adding vegetables or fruits, lowering the refined sugar content and prioritising more nutritional fats.
Biscuits are Steph’s go-to bake and she tests herself by trying to create a better version of a supermarket favourite.
The amateur baker is a fan of making bread and shared many photographs of her creations on her Instagram page .
What has happened to Steph in Bake Off so far?
- Week One, Cakes - Steph's Great Grandma Rosie's Fruit Cake was described as "juicy" by Paul. She then came an impressive third in the Technical before her A Sundae On The Beach Cake showing a dropped ice cream had a good flavour but was a bit dry.
- Week Two, Biscuits - Her Chocolate, Caramel Macchiato Biscuit Bars didn't wow Paul and Prue but Steph was able to win back favour with her "clever" Gingerbread cat sculpture.
- Week Three, Bread - The baker got praised for both her Sundried Tomato and Pesto star tear and share and her creative Hand-tied bouquet of flowers scored bread.
- Week Four, Dairy – The baker shone the brightest in all three challenges, thrilling Paul and Prue’s tastebuds with her sensational choice of flavours. She even won the Technical – which was to create 12 maids of honour that even Henry VIII would love.
- Week Five, The Roaring Twenties - The talented baker was named Star Baker for a second week in a row thanks to her "perfect" zesty custard pies and her unique Sour Lime Pina Colada cake with Swiss meringue buttercream. And she was fourth in the Technical.
- Week Six, Dessert Week - Steph kicked off with an Eton Mess which of course Paul and Prue loved. She also sailed through the tricky Technical Challenge. But it was her Mirror Bombe Showstopper that sealed the deal and she was named Star Baker for a third time in a row.
- Week Seven, Festival Week – It was another great week for Steph, even if she didn’t get Star Baker again. The talented cook got a Paul Hollywood handshake for her Zest and Spice Hot Cross Buns Signature dish and she was pretty chuffed about it. Her Orange and Chai spiced layered cake for the Showstopper might have had some faults but she did enough to remain in the competition.
- Week Eight, Pastry – It was a shaky week for Steph which saw her burst into tears during the stress of the Moroccan pie Technical challenge. However her goat's cheese Tarte Tatin and curried potato Carousel Pie Showstopper helped her nab Star Baker for a fourth time.
- Week Nine, Patisserie - Steph's mix of flavours for her Raspberry, lemon and white chocolate domed tart on Pâte Sablée pastry pleased the judges. And she managed to win them over again with her opera-themed Showstopper which was a sugar glass case with orange sponge and chocolate ganache.
- Week Ten, The final - Despite being named Star Baker four times during the series, Steph had horror after horror with her baking attempts in the final. Her Technical souffle was a disaster seeing her descend into tears. It was sad for all to see and resulted in the runner-up even getting a hug from Paul Hollywood after he judged her disappointing Showstopper. David Atherton was crowned the winner.
What has Steph said about The Great British Bake Off 2019?
Taking part in Bake Off has been the “most incredible and surreal experience” for Steph, who “didn’t really dream that I would get in”.
Discussing her first week in the tent, she joked how fellow contestant Jamie had unintentionally helped to “break the ice”.
