American Idol star Chris said he was "absolutely devastated and heartbroken" after Hannah's death and postponed his tour to grieve with his wife Deanna and their other kids.

Now the family has released a statement revealing she took her own life while under the influence of narcotics.

The family said "beloved daughter" Hannah had mental health struggles "from a young age" and "was in and out of therapy and treatment centers"; for years.

"As Hannah got older, she struggled to find her footing and began using drugs and often found herself in abusive relationships," the statement goes on.

"Just months after losing her biological father to suicide, Hannah was the victim of a crime and was shot in the face.

"We did everything we could to support her and get her the help she needed to recover from these tragedies and get her life back on track.

"We had just recently made plans with Hannah for her to seek further treatment and move closer to the family."

On the morning of her death, Hannah reached out to her family and said she "was in fear for her life" after her boyfriend allegedly physically attacked her and took her car, according to the statement obtained by .

The family said they called police, and officers visited to carry out a welfare check but left and determining she was OK.

Hannah's boyfriend later called 911 after finding her dead by hanging.

Police and the coroner found no evidence of foul play, the family said.

They added: "Hannah was a generous and loving person who wanted more for herself and others.

"She will forever be in the hearts and minds of those of us who love her.

";We ask for your continued privacy at this time while we grieve."

Plagued by demons

Hannah's troubled last years were filled with tragedy, violence and a turbulent love life.

Her biological father Randall Scott Price died by suicide in March 2018.

Seven months later, mom-of-two Hannah was reportedly shot in the face as she was caught in a run-in with gang members in Humbolt, Tennessee.

She shared graphic pictures of her wounds on Facebook after the attack.

She underwent emergency surgery but lost an eye and had to wear a prosthetic.

According to one of Hannah's Facebook posts, the shooting happened when she was taken to "a place where she did not feel safe" by a "friend she barely knew."

Hannah claimed she was shot as she tried to save her friend's life after teenagers who wanted to join a gang tried to kill him.

She said: “By the time I noticed they were trying to shoot at him I was trying to run the kid over with my car and I ended up getting shot in the face."

"I was blind for a little over two weeks and this happened directly after my dad had committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. It was a lot.";

She also set up a GoFundMe, saying: "I totaled my car whenever I was shot trying to save my friend so I also need to save money to get a new vehicle so that I can start working again.”

In April last year, Hannah and her boyfriend Bobby Jolly were arrested after a hit-and-run on Interstate 40, according to

Police reports alleged Bobby shot at another car while fleeing what they deemed a road rage attack.

A state trooper claomed Bobby and Hannah admitted using a gun to intimidate the victim but denied firing the weapon.

They were both charged with aggravated assault.

Hannah failed to show up in court for her latest scheduled hearing on November 3, nine days before her death.

Hannah's social media activity in her final weeks also paint a grim picture.

In one of her last Instagram messages she wrote: “Look around and love somebody the world’s been hateful long enough” and added the hashtag iloveyouasyouare.

Earlier posts showed a public war of words between the pair.

In February Hannah wrote "Ugly" under a photo of Bobby.

Three weeks later he hit back: “F*** you, how bout you hop your funky a** the f*** up off of my s***! Sorry, not sorry....”

Bobby was arrested on the day of Hannah's death but later released without charge.

Singer's grief

It was claimed in November detectives had told her family it was being treated as homicide.

But police later called the speculation "premature and irresponsible" and said they were still investigating.

Chris was in the middle of his Dearly Beloved Tour but flew to Nashville to be with his grieving family after Hannah's death.

He said at the time: "I am still processing the last 24 hours. I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken.

"I just recently lost my mother to cancer but I was blessed with the chance to say goodbye and I was processing it privately.

"We never got to say goodbye to our precious Hannah and it’s another huge hit to our family.

"Thank you all for your kind words and condolences. They are truly felt and appreciated.

"I am now taking time be present with my family as we attempt to heal from this devastating loss.

"Hannah, I love you. I miss you. I wish I could hold you. This hurts so deeply💔💔💔".

Hannah and her younger brother, Griffin, 23, are Deanna's children from a previous relationship.

The singer and Deanna also have twins Adalynn Rose and Noah James, ten.
