Kim Kardashian accused of ‘stealing’ fashion designer’s look for Met Gala outfit as critics insist ‘he did it first!’
KIM Kardashian has been accused of stealing a fashion designer's look for her 2023 Met Gala attire.
Kim, 42, made sure eyes were on her Monday evening when she attended the prestigious fashion event wearing a custom-made Schiaparelli gown made entirely of strands of pearls.
The garment featured a silk corset bodice and bra in a golden hue, and Kim added a huge diamond-and-pearl choker, diamond stud earrings, white sandals encrusted with pearls, and a matching pearl anklet.
She completed her look with an over-the-top coat worn off her shoulders and details of her look later emerged online.
An on the official Schiaparelli page described the outfit as: "Draped top and skirt made from over 16 000 crystals and more than 50 000 freshwater pearls. Whitewashed faille stole. Blush satin molded corset.
"Choker, pearl drop earrings and articulated ring made from crystals and baroque pearls."
The picture showed Laura Govan at the 2022 Grammy Awards wearing a white dress that featured pearl detailing.
People quickly commented on the post as one person declared: "You did it first."
Another person claimed: "Kim Kardashian stole your look," while a third wrote: "come see here how Kim K stole @gertjohancoetzee design!"
"You came with this design first," a fourth commented, while a fifth added: "Someone stole your look."
A different Instagram user said: "You did it first @gertjohancoetzee. You inspired the look, I hate that they won’t even mention it."
The conversation continued on Reddit when one person claimed: "Fashion designer Gert-Johan Coetzee going on a rampage on ig."
"I have seen dresses like this since like the 1920s lol. Please don’t tell me this designer thinks they are original lol," someone claimed on the thread.
"Idk nothing is really original anymore," one person pointed out.
Another commented: "I don't think a pearl dress is a super original idea in general, from schiaparelli or this designer ... even Kim said it was a low pressure situation/just wanted to feel glamorous...
"I take that as a "I wasn't trying to reinvent the wheel this year" type of statement," they added.
Another person reminded critics that Skims founder Kim wore a very similar outfit back in 2007.
"Kim’s whole look seemed like a nod to her Playboy cover where she’s covered in pearls," they wrote.
The comments come after Kim appeared to accidentally "destroy" her stunning Schiaparelli gown on Monday evening.
The Hulu star was spotted post-Met Gala with the bottom of her dress ripping as she walked.
It looked like Kim's strides tore the strands of pearls, with threads hanging loosely around her calves as the precious stones fell to the ground.
NOT AGAIN
After last year's Met Gala, critics were horrified when Kim seemingly damaged Marilyn Monroe's legendary dress.
The Old Hollywood star wore the stunning slip as she sang "Happy Birthday" to President John F. Kennedy, and was kept at Ripley's Believe It Or Not in Orlando, Florida, for safekeeping until Kim wore it.
However, shots of the dress after its modern-day outing surfaced online, showing damage to the fabric and stone decorations of the dress.
A "before" shot of the gown displayed the shoulder strap intact as it rested upon a plush mannequin.
An "after" photo showed a tattered and ripped strap hanging from the same figure.
