Dance music is never hard work for HOUSEKEEPING
We caught up with the London based DJ collective ahead of their performance at fabric for ANTs to find out where it all started, their summer residency at Hï Ibiza for Black Coffee and their record label HOUSEKEEPING Records
HOUSEKEEPING are a London based DJ collective that have risen to prominence in clubland over recent years.
Founded in 2012 by DJs Jacobi, Taylor HK, Sebastian MDH and Carl Waxberg, they have enjoyed a meteoric rise over the last couple of years, captivating audiences with deep, hypnotic sets blended with tribal elements and sell out HOUSEKEEPING parties in London and beyond.
Over the past six years, they have played at some of the biggest international parties, including at Hï Ibiza in 2017 for Black Coffee’s Saturday, at In The Dark with Joris Voorn, Steve Lawler, Nic Fanciulli, Luciano, and Kölsch as well as at ANTS, Ushuaïa Ibiza and Scorpios, Mykonos. This time last year they toured South America, visiting Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, and DJing alongside Guy Gerber in Brazil.
This year the lads have enjoyed another great summer with their residency at Black Coffee Saturdays at Hï Ibiza. Fresh from the final party of the season, the lads are back in the capital this weekend to play at London institution fabric as revered Ibiza brand ANTS host a debut showcase at the club. HOUSEKEEPING join a line up featuring the likes of Steve Lawler, Eli & Fur, SecondCity and Emanuel Satie for what looks set to be a huge night.
We caught up with HOUSEKEEPING this week to find out more about where it all began, their residency for Black Coffee at Hï Ibiza, their record label and their excitement at playing fabric this Friday night. Plus Taylor HK has recorded an exclusive mix for our friends over at which you can listen to .
HOUSEKEEPING was born in Ibiza back in 2012. What was the catalyst? We heard you wanted to marry high end establishments in the West End of London with house and techno?
When we first started going to Ibiza it was 20 years ago and there was very little VIP experience available and it certainly wasn't the VIP culture that we wanted to bring to central London. The music and the vibe of the island is what we cherish and wanted to bring home with us. The anything goes, hedonism, free spirited hippy fun combined with cutting edge house music.
What were people listening to at clubs in the West End in 2012? London as far as I can remember has always been rocking even with all the challenges to night life that it has faced over recent years so I'm wondering where the vibe was lacking in the West End and has this now changed?
There was always a vibe in central London and nights were going off but the music really catered more for the hip-hop and EDM crowd. There was very little, if any at all, good quality deep house, tech house and techno.
You are about to play again at one of London's finest clubs, fabric for ANTS which has been flying the flag for great electronic music for coming up to two decades. Sounds like it's going to be a great show? Tell us more.
This venue holds a very special place in our hearts. We went to the opening night of fabric two decades ago. fabric has been showcasing religiously the very best in underground music for so long and is an absolute institution.
What are your memories of partying at fabric over the years?
Massively vibey!
For those who haven't seen you play, how does the dynamic work between the four of you when performing? Do you all perform back to back or individually depending on the booking or party?
Occasionally, all four of us play back to back but normally we split the set and two of us play back to back for the first half and the other two for the second half. We all play individually too.
As HOUSEKEEPING you have all bases covered as a dance music brand. How important is the brand aspect of what you do both as a collective of DJs, promoters and with the label?
We love house music and we love going out. We try on our nights to provide the best venue, the best production, the best crowd and the best music to give anyone that comes to our nights the finest experience we can. A good night out really is a combination of all of these aspects coming together so yeah, its extremely important to us.
You have had a massive summer with a residency for Black Coffee at Hï Ibiza. How did the residency come about in the first place and who apart from BC has blown you away on the weekly line ups?
The residency came about from the summer of 2017 when we were playing 'In the Dark’ Thursdays at Hï Ibiza, and a couple of shows for Black Coffee on the Saturdays. We got on super well with the club and all of the team there and were lucky enough to be considered as weekly residents off the back of that. Ame, Nic Fanciulli, Jamie Jones, Nico Stojan really smashed the place up when they played. It was a pleasure to witness.
Aside from the residency what else have you been up to this summer, do you have any special highlights?
We rented a small finca in Cala Vedella for the season which was a first for us. The whole team stayed there, and we had various friends coming in and out all season to visit us. The decks got smashed, the drinks were flowing, and it saw some pretty wild parties. We played the legendary Kave with Apollonia which was a huge badge of honour.
Tell us about your record label. You are 11 releases in now, what's your favourite release so far and what have you got coming up that you can tell us about?
Haha, it depends which of the four of us you ask! We all have our preferences. We have a 12 track VA release coming out in a month. It features a mixed bag of tricks from all four of us and all the other artists signed to HOUSEKEEPING Records. Everything from vegan techno to jacking tech house and deep.
You have recorded a mix for our friends at . Can you tell us about it and some of the big tracks in there that we should be looking out for?
We wanted to keep the mix relatively consistent with what we have been playing in Ibiza this summer. There are a few biggies in there. Music is subjective so what we might think is a banger you might disagree with! Would love to know which track you think are the good ones!
HOUSEKEEPING play ANTS debut at Fabric this Friday 2nd November. Tickets available .
