Peaky Blinders creator reveals season 6 time jump will land Tommy Shelby at dawn of World War II

PEAKY Blinders creator Steven Knight has teased the beginning of the end for Cillian Murphy's BBC drama series.

Steven has always insisted that the gangster-led show would focus on the specific time period between the end of World War I in 1918, and the start of World War II in 1939, and he has now revealed that season six will feature another time jump, bringing viewers up to the 1930s and closer to the end than ever.

"It’s moving the story forward. We always jump in time so we are into the 1030s. Expect the unexpected," said Steven.

"Because of the nature of the decade, the 30s, we know what happened at the end – that war began."

Speaking to PA, he added: "There are rumblings and rumours of war and that is overshadowing the whole thing. It makes it all the more... the stakes are higher."

Season five of Peaky Blinders ended with Tommy in a new position of power and crossing paths with fascist leader Oswald Mosley (played by Sam Claflin), a real life figure.

However the acclaimed season ended with an assassination attempt at a rally for Mosley, with Tommy's losing numerous members of his gang.

It then ended on a cliffhanger as Tommy started to lose his mind and was on the verge of killing himself after seeing the ghost of his dead wife, Grace (played by Annabelle Wallis).

Production on season six kicked off earlier in January with the title of the premiere being revealed as director Anthony Byrne took to Instagram to share a picture of the front page of a script.

It revealed that the series opener is called 'Black Day' and Anthony captioned the shot: "We are in pre-production on Season 6. More to come, By Order of..."
