During today's show Piers said: "The BBC are desperate to keep Strictly going. It’s the one thing we're all sitting at home demanding to watch, people prancing around in tiaras and diamantes.

"I’m coping fine without Strictly, but I’m aware it’s a big show and everyone loves it. They’re desperate to keep it going."

He continued: "After years of the infamous curse with, just by gyrating next to each other for a few hours a day, almost everyone on Strictly, apart from Susanna allegedly, everyone on Strictly apparently found their partners so irresistible they had to take their work home with them.

"And now, they’re all going to be put in isolation together for months. How is that going to work?!"

Hitting back at her teasing co-host, Susanna Reid, who reached the final of the BBC dancing competition with Kevin Clifton in 2013, told Piers: "There's nothing alleged about it."

The TV host went on to liken the cast to "the Moonies" - the controversial Unification Church which has been accused of brainwashing members.

He joked: "They’re like the Moonies the Strictly lot. If you’ve been on Strictly you become like a Moonie.

"You can do no harm, can do no wrong. They’re all walking around with metaphorical glitter balls still in their brains."

It comes hours after The Sun exclusively revealed Strictly bosses are planning to put celebs and their pro dance partners in isolation together to keep the show on the air.

A TV insider said: “Strictly is so up in the air at the moment — but it is too important to the Beeb for plans not to be put in place.

“The stars would be put into isolation with their pro partners over a week before the start of the series to avoid any risks of illness.

“In theory they would stay in the same place and then train together daily with minimal contact with the outside world.

“It’s an extreme idea but it’s one of many that’s being bandied around in meetings at the moment.

“The Strictly curse is something bosses want to avoid every year because they want it to remain a family show — but it’s a risk they’re willing to take.

“Strictly is the biggest show on the BBC and they want to do everything to keep it going.”
