Clubz – Places and Spaces – The Magic Roundabout, London
We chat to the team behind the hidden gem on the roundabout in the heart of Old Street Station in the capital
IT'S not often somewhere as unique and exciting as The Magic Roundabout comes about.
Hidden on a roundabout in Old Street Station in London, this place is a very special winter wonderland that brings together great DJs, live music and plenty of quality cocktails, award winning and branded pop up food vendors and some no-expenses spared themed areas. These include the psychedelic Far Out Forest, The Bassano Hunting Lodge complete with taxidermy trophy wall and an opium den to fit with the fact it is the Year of the Dragon.
The colours, character, charm and complete authenticity of the space makes it an essential place to visit this winter. What’s more, with Halloween parties, garage parties, and a big New Year’s Eve event all lined-up for the coming months, there is no excuse not to get down and check it out. Before you do so, though, get to know a little more about the place from this interview with Sarah Holgate who runs the Magic Roundabout.
How long has your venue been open? Does it have a strong music legacy and is that important?
We opened our doors in June 2015 with a music policy of House and Disco. Since then we'd played host to some great parties and collaborated with venue heavyweights including Egg LDN and XOYO.
What is the style of your venue in terms of decor and vibe? Old school and raw or futuristic and hi tech for example?
Being in a roundabout makes us totally unique, there isn't anything like us in the world! We wanted the venue to feel like you were walking into a festival and so there are lots of differently themed areas and little things to discover. We also try to be as green as possible so use a lot of upcycled and recycled materials.
How many rooms and bars does it have, does it have podiums, terraces, a garden, a mezzanine, etc?
The venue has three bars, three bookable areas and three food traders positioned around the site. Its fully outdoors but completely covered and heated in the winter and open air in the summer so it offers the best of both worlds.
Give us some tech specs - what sounds system does it have, what lights, LEDs or big screens does it have?
We have a Flare Audio sound system and an amazing lighting rig from Halo Lighting who are the best in the industry. Lighting plays a huge part because of the unique architectural features in the venue.
What are some of the key nights and parties that take place at the venue and what makes them great?
We work with different promoters every month so there is always something new to come and explore and it keeps the crowd fresh. However our vibe on Thursdays for after work drinks is second to none; we're super chilled, friendly and fun. On the weekends we are one of the only true day party venues in London. We normally kick proceedings off at lunchtime with the Jerk BBQ and burgers on hand to line stomachs ready for the party.
Why should people come to your venue, what stands it apart and makes it special?
Have you ever been to another venue in a roundabout? No?! need we say more :)
