Former Liverpool and Arsenal star Jermaine Pennant joins League One Bury after pay dispute with Singaporean side Tampines Rovers

Winger signs with Shakers until the end of the season after refusing to take pay cut in Singapore

JERMAINE PENNANT has joined League One Bury – after his pay dispute with Singaporean side Tampines Rovers.

The ex-Liverpool and Arsenal winger has signed a deal until the end of the season at Gigg Lane.

Pennant, 34, has been training with the Shakers in recent weeks after leaving S-League side.

He left Tampines in November following a clash over his “super-scale” salary.

Pennant refused to accept a reduction in his £23,495-a-month wage when the club when the club fell into financial difficulties.

Club chairman Krishna Ramachandra said it would "create a social injustice" to carry on paying the former England U21 international his inflated salary while his team-mates took a pay cut.

Rovers finished second, one point behind Albirex Niigata, during Pennant's season with the club.

Pennant, who once “forgot” he owned a Porsche during his spell with Spanish side Real Zaragoza, will wear the number 38 shirt at Bury.

He will not be available for Friday’s clash with Port Vale as the move has not yet received international clearance.

Bury sit 20th in League One, out  of the relegation places on goal difference.

Pennant has made 273 league appearances in England, scoring 18 goals.
