Researchers studied the attitudes and love lives of 196 people in relationships of longer than four months.

Results showed couples who regularly made good-natured jokes about sex enjoyed increased comfort, fun and closeness.

Laughter and lovemaking are regular bedfellows as people rate a sense of humour as a top turn-on.

The study found simply making more jokes was not enough to improve a couple’s sex life – it was important for them to be positive and upbeat.

If jokes were negative or one-sided they could be a mood-killer and make the other partner uncomfortable.

A 2018 study suggested women might prefer clean humour from men when looking for a long-term partner, while being more open to a naughty quip if they were after a fling.
