The England team who started against Slovakia

ADAM LALLANA'S late goal got England off to a flyer as they look to secure qualification for the World Cup in 2018.

Lallana struck deep into stoppage time to see off ten-man Slovakia and ensure Sam Allardyce began his reign as national team boss with victory.

The Liverpool midfielder's performance was one of the bright spots in an otherwise frustrating performance which still leaves Allardyce with problems to solve in his side.

SunSport's Mike McGrath gives his verdict on who shone for the Three Lions.

JOE HART: Little to do in terms of shots saved. A poor kick in the first half shows why he’s been under fire from Pep Guardiola with the ball at his feet. Composed after that. 6

KYLE WALKER: Decent cross in the first half that almost found Kane. He tried to bomb forward but Slovakia got their angles right and made it frustrating. Pace meant he was untroubled on his flank. 6

DANNY ROSE: Always in the game with his pacy runs on the left flank. But at the other end made an error that led to Duris setting up a big chance. 5

JOHN STONES: Triedto start attacks with the ball at his feet and looked very comfortable in possession. Any errors he made were unpunished which is all that matters as a defender. 6

GARY CAHILL: Decent clearances from crosses in the first half. Stands out with his flash new haircut – and looked looks the part with an assured at the back as England had so much more possession. 6

JORDAN HENDERSON: Big Sam's team look more solid with him in – but they also missed Dele Alli’s raids forward from midfield. Had lots of running in him but was hard to find room in a packed midfield. 5

ERIC DIER: Protected his defence with discipline and did well with his positioning. Could step back if Stones wanted to carry the ball forward. And he hung back when full-backs tried to attack. 6

RAHEEM STERLING: Went just wide after Kane teed him up in the first half, then his lob got tipped over after the break. Threatening on the ball and England tried to get the ball to him as much as possible. 6

WAYNE ROONEY: Needed to be further up the pitch to inflict damage. Was so deep in midfield and his range of passing was off. Jose Mourinho insists Rooney is a striker – and he has a point. 5

ADAM LALLANA: Looked most likely to unlock the Slovakia defence with his trickery then popped up with the last-gasp winner when his shot squirmed in. Hit post before that and had effort saved. 7

HARRY KANE: Short on confidence. The Tottenham striker needs a goal to kick-start his season as he looks off his game. Got flattened twice by Martin Skrtel which meant red for the Slovak skipper. 4
