It is believed several players tried to talk him out of the decision just minutes before a press conference was called to announce the news.
And TV show claims things got so heated that only Pique's intervention prevented Ramos and Rubiales coming to blows.
OK Diario director Eduardo Inda explained: "The two squared up.

"The level of tension was huge. Gerard Pique had to intervene and mediate so that things did not escalate."
He adds that Rubiales was particularly angry at hearing from the media that Lopetegui would be staying on and finding out the players had leaked this message to put the pressure on and ensure it would happen.
The Spanish FA chief demanded an explanation from Ramos and things became heated.
However, after Pique's intervention, the two shared a hug and the tension was eased.
