HARRY Kane’s late World Cup winner was watched by 21.3million people — easily outstripping Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle.
It made England’s 2-1 win over Tunisia Britain’s most-viewed TV show of the year.
And as Russia 2018 fever gripped the nation yesterday hitman Kane hailed jubilant Three Lions fans. He said: “Watching the celebrations back home and in the stadium — incredible.
“I’ve been part of that before as a kid watching football. To see it and be part of it was amazing.”
An average audience of 13.7million saw Our Boys win their opening World Cup game, with skipper Kane netting both goals — the last in added time.
But ratings peaked on BBC1 at 18.3million in the closing minutes, with 69 per cent of all UK TV viewers engrossed.
Three million more watched on the Beeb’s iPlayer and BBC Sport website and app — the highest live viewing for a BBC programme online.
Last month’s Royal Wedding had a peak BBC audience of 13.1million, with ITV’s at 3.6million
TV’s Gary Lineker called the stats, making Monday’s game the fifth most- watched England World Cup clash, “astonishing”.
