World Cup 2018: Poland furious as referee waves M’Baye Niang on to score controversial goal for Senegal

Former Watford forward Niang nipped in to take advantage of some woeful Polish defending

POLAND were left cursing their luck after conceding a remarkable second goal in their 2-1 defeat to Senegal.

Former Watford forward M’Baye Niang nipped in to take advantage of some woeful Polish defending – and a wave from referee Nawaf Shukralla.

Niang was off the pitch following treatment when Senegal headed the ball out of defence on the edge of their own area.

But he was waved back on at a vital moment and raced straight onto a loose back-pass from ex-West Brom midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak, after re-entering the pitch from the right wing where there was no defensive cover.

Wojciech Szczesny compounded the shambolic Polish defending by racing 35 yards off his line, with Niang clipping the ball past him and sprinting into the area for a tap-in.

Poland fans may have been angered by the referee’s part in the goal.

Senegal held on to win their first World Cup match in 16 years

But with Niang waved back on as Senegal defended, Krychowiak and Szczesny were the real villains – even if they were a little unfortunate.

Poland did not have much luck either for Senegal’s opener, as Brazilian-born defender Thiago Cionek diverted Idrissa Gueye’s shot into his own net.

Krychowiak netted four minutes from time but Senegal held on to claim victory in their first World Cup match since 2002.

It was the second shock result of the day in Group H, with ten-man Colombia going down 2-1 to Japan in the first game of the day.
