World Cup 2018: Belgium win controversial VAR penalty against Tunisia with tackle ‘outside the box’
Chelsea star Eden Hazard tucked home the spot-kick in the sixth minute after being fouled by Syam Ben Youssef
EDEN HAZARD tucked home a controversial penalty against Tunisia despite appearing to be fouled outside the box.
Despite using VAR, the referee awarded Belgium the spot-kick after the Chelsea winger was clumsily brought down by Syam Ben Youssef.
The ex-Lille ace found the bottom left corner in typically cool fashion, as the Red Devils took the lead after just six minutes.
But question marks remain whether the penalty should have been given, with replays showing Hazard to be hacked down just outside the area.
Understandably, the talking point sent social media into meltdown, with fans outraged how the ref failed to overturn his decision.
Some argued that as the foul happened right on the edge of the line - which warranted a penalty - but the vast majority were left unconvinced.
One person tweeted: "How was that not corrected? Clearly outside the box."
While another said: "Wrong call on that penalty, Ref. Foul occurred outside the penalty box but player dived into the box."
It was a frantic opening 18 minutes in the Group G clash between Belgium and their African opponents.
Manchester United striker Romelu Lukaku doubled Roberto Martinez's side's lead with a low finish into the far corner for his third World Cup goal this tournament.
