World Cup 2018: Mats Hummels hails the Three Lions’ chances of glory as he apologises for shock Germany exit
Bayern Munich star is distraught after the holders' 'bitter' failure against South Korea but bigs up the Three Lions
DISTRAUGHT Mats Hummels has apologised for Germany's shock World Cup exit - and wished they were like England.
The Bayern Munich defender claimed the Three Lions are now one of the tournament favourites and saluted their smooth progress so far.
Hummels believes England and Belgium are the only big guns who have made it look easy so far.
Holders Germany crashed out after a 2-0 loss against South Korea left them bottom of Group F.
And the 29-year-old said: "We believed until the very end – even after going 1-0 down. But we did not put the ball in the goal.
“We had enough opportunities. That broke our neck today. Apart from Belgium and England, every favourite has big problems because the smaller teams do that very well.
“The last convincing game we delivered was in March 2017. That was a bit long ago.
From the 65th [minute]we went wild, got incredible counter-attack. We also lost the train to the goal.
“If I make that in the 86th minute, we’ll talk about how awesome it is that we’ve got on.
"Unfortunately we are talking about something else. A very, very bitter day for all German football fans.”
