World Cup 2018: France captain Hugo Lloris nearly swallows huge dragonfly during Uruguay clash

Tottenham No1 attacked by monster creature during quarter-final showdown in Russia

FRANCE captain Hugo Lloris nearly swallowed a humongous dragonfly during the World Cup quarter-final clash with Uruguay.

The Tottenham No1, 31, was attacked by the monster creature - which wouldn't have looked out of place in a Bushtucker Trial - early in the first-half.

Lloris promptly spat it out, but - as ever - the incredible footage didn't escape the Twittersphere, who were quick to make jokes.

While most poked fun of Lloris for his misfortune, one suggested it means the French stopper is in for one heck of a game.

The social media user claimed: "I was watching this camera shot of a dragonfly landing on the mouth of French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

"There's a folklore about dragonflies. When they appear around you - you have protection from someone in heaven."

The incident occurred just before France took a 1-0 lead in the game thanks to a Raphael Varane header.

And Didier Deschamps was indebted to his under-pressure No1, as he made a phenomenal diving save from a Martin Caceres header to ensure his side went into half-time with the lead.

France went on to score again the second-half - thanks to a Fernando Muslera howler, akin to Loris Karius in the Champions League final - as they reached the semis in Russia.

Here's the best of the dragonfly reaction from Twitter...
