Three Lions beats Demi Lovato to no.1 in the charts 22 years after its release as England’s World Cup run continues
THREE Lions has surged to the top of the UK charts after England's historic World Cup victory over Sweden - some 22 years after it was first released.
The track, by comedians Frank Skinner and David Baddiel with The Lightning Seeds, knocked last week's chart-topper Solo, by Clean Bandit and Demi Lovato, off the top spot.
The number one comes 22 years after the song was released in 1996 to accompany the European Championships, which were that year held in England.
The song entered the charts last week at number 33 but has smashed its way to the top following England's 2-0 win in the quarter finals in Russia yesterday.
The last time Three Lions was in the charts was in the 2010 World Cup, when it got to number 10.
Marvin Humes, presenter of the Big Top 40, said: "What an incredible day! It's only right that Three Lions is number one on the chart.
"Our boys in Russia are doing us so proud. The nation has come together and hopefully this is only the beginning of the celebrations."
Shortly after Friday's victory some England fans invaded a branch of Ikea singing 'Three Lions'.
The cheeky group managed to infiltrate the Stratford branch of the Swedish founded flat pack giant to continue their celebrations.

Video from the store shows the group dancing and singing shortly after England booked their place in the World Cup semi final by beating Sweden 2-0.
An IKEA spokesperson said: “We are aware of a small group of fans celebrating the match result in one of our stores.
"Being both British and Swedish, we were on the edge of our seats during the game and we would like to say ‘Grattis!’ (that’s congratulations in Swedish) to the England team for getting through to the semi-finals.
"In celebration, we’ve put one of the nation’s favourite dishes, fish and chips, on offer for just £1. Visit IKEA.co.uk for more information.”
