Is there a petition for a World Cup Bank Holiday?

A petition has been set up calling for a Bank Holiday if England fulfil the dream of lifting the World Cup on Sunday.

The appeal, posted by Liam Betson on the Parliament website, said a bank holiday is needed because if England are victorious then Monday will "not be pleasant" for fans.

The petition said: "If England win the World Cup, the Monday should be made a bank holiday for 2018.

"We need this for all those supporting England as the next day will not be pleasant for all fans."

So far it has gathered more than 200,000 signatures — surpassing the 100,000 required to be debated in parliament.

Will there be a World Cup Bank Holiday?

Although the petition has smashed the 100,000 requirement for a hearing in Parliament, it is unlikely to result in a Bank Holiday any time soon.

It usually takes several weeks and months for petitions to be debated by MPs due to the hectic nature of parliamentary business.

Although a later date might be feasible.

And the Prime Minister could decide to declare one herself — although Theresa May has not said if she would do so or not.

Labour will put pressure on the Government to call a World Cup Bank Holiday.

Jeremy Corbyn says he wants the whole UK to get a day off if Gareth Southgate's team emulates the heroes of 1966.

Earlier this month, a senior Labour spokesman said: "We don't want to get ahead of ourselves.

"But I think it is the case that Jeremy believes that if England were to win the World Cup there should be a public Bank Holiday in celebration."

They added: "The World Cup is a very special international competition.

"It's something that brings people together on a very large scale and we need recognition of that and recognition of the importance of football in the country."
