Leader Frances O’Grady said: “Workers put in billions worth of unpaid overtime. They should be allowed to enjoy special occasions.”

Bosses across the country may be worried that productivity will slump as fans gathered in pubs to watch the World Cup semi-final.

The nation's hearts were left broken after England was defeated 2-1 by Croatia. Players and fans were in tears at the final whistle as the national side lost in extra time.

Unions have called on managers to arrange flexible working hours or allow staff to work at home. Employers should be as generous as possible with annual leave requests too.

Shadow sports minister Rosena Allin-Khan said: "It has been fantastic to see England progress to the semi-final.

"Let us pay tribute to all of those who are working tonight, those keeping our towns and cities running, our emergency services and those working in our pubs and at big screen events.
