Why is there a third-place playoff?

The two losing semi-finalist teams take part in the third-place playoff usually one day before the final.

The match is played to determine the third and fourth places in the tournament.

Many teams use this opportunity to thank their fans for their support and allow players who have not already played to get some World Cup experience.

England will take on Belgium, who beat them in the group stages, in the third-place playoff in 2018.
