South Americans endured a sub-par summer resulting in Argentinian FA paying the ex-Sevilla chief £1.2m to leave

ARGENTINA have sacked boss Jorge Sampaoli following their World Cup last-16 exit to France, according to reports in Spain.

AS claim the former Sevilla chief, 58, has been given his marching orders after enduring a sub-par summer.

The report also states the Argentinian FA have paid Sampaoli £1.2million to leave - far below the £15m sum said to be in his contract.

Lionel Messi and Co never really arrived at the tournament in Russia, barely scraping through the group by the skin of their teeth.

A 1-1 draw to minnows Iceland was followed by a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of now-finalists Croatia.

The nervy 2-1 win over Nigeria secured their spot in the knock-out stages, but they were outclassed by France in a 4-3 thriller.

Following their Russian dumping, the AFA revealed they would make a decision on Sampaoli's future.

A statement read: "In the next executive committee meeting, which is planned for the end of July, the members will make a joint evaluation about Sampaoli's work and future."

However, Spanish reports claim the decision has been made and the former Sevilla coach will leave.

It had been believed Sampaoli could take over Argentina's Under-20s in a desperate bid to save his job, but that may now be off the table.
