World Cup 2018: Mario Mandzukic scores first ever final own goal taking tournament tally to a record 12 as Croatia lose

Croatian nodded an Antoine Griezmann free-kick into his own net to become the owner of a very unwanted record

MARIO MANDZUKIC scored the first-ever own goal in a World Cup final... and taken the tournament's tally to a record 12.

The Croatian - who scored the winner against England in extra-time of the semi-final - nodded an Antoine Griezmann free-kick into his own net as Croatia lost 4-2.

In doing so, Mandzukic became the first person to ever find the back of his own net in a World Cup final game.

However, he can feel somewhat unlucky, as Paul Pogba - who leapt for the header with Mandzukic - started in an offside position.

Fortunately for Mandzukic, Ivan Perisic scored a beauty at the other end just minutes later to level the tie at 1-1 - before things went quickly south for the Croats.

No World Cup final had been settled in 90 minutes since 2002 - when Brazil beat Germany 2-0... but France saw to this game with a second-half blitz.
